The human hand is a marvel of evolutionary biomechanics. With an opposable thumb and four long dexterous fingers held together by 27 bones and 27 joints, it can grasp, clench and twist with extraordinary dexterity and delicacy. Despite decades of innovation, robotic replicas are still no match. Even today’s most cutting-edge metallic fingers fumble at shoelaces and keys.

That lack of precision is one of the main reasons the parade of jaw-dropping robotic feats in recent years – from choreographed kung fu moves to record-breaking 100-meter sprints – has yet to translate into meaningful commercial deployment. Alex Zhou, founder of a pioneering startup called LinkerBot, estimates that 20,000 humanoid robots were installed globally last year, but the number of actual working machines is in the low thousands. The rest are mainly for entertainment.

That won’t change, he says, until humanoids can replicate the capabilities of life-like hands. “Robot hands are the link between the machine and the physical world,” says Zhou, sporting spiky hair and a powder-blue summer jacket during an interview at LinkerBot’s headquarters in Beijing.
