Nscale’s AI Buildout Hit by Fire, Delays and Angry Workers Ahead of IPO

One flagship AI data center in Norway is six months behind schedule, with workers set to be housed in a floating hotel to get it over the finish line.

The Kalmar, a drab, three-story floating hotel once used to detain migrants, is towed into the Norwegian village of Glomfjord, sea eagles circling overhead. Its approximately 220 bedrooms are empty in early October, waiting for the arrival of hundreds of construction workers to speed up the buildout of Nscale’s data center, rising on the edge of the fjord.

The facility, just north of the Arctic circle, is billed as a flagship site for the British data-center developer, but construction issix months behind schedule, set back by leaks in the cooling system, local regulations, construction delays and a fire, according to people close to the project and public records. So far only 6.4 megawatts of the intended 30-megawatt data center is up and running.
