Microsoft Science President Peter Lee just posted on Linkedin that he is stepping down.

This is the research unit that initially led the Microsoft's AI work but was outpaced by OpenAI.
Lee's group later turned to evaluating OpenAI's models, including how they could be distilled into smaller models and applied to healthcare.

It's unclear whether he's heading to a rival lab, a startup or something outside the industry.

The exit completes a gradual step back that began earlier this year, when executive vice president Igor Tsyganskiy took over Microsoft Research and Lee became president of Microsoft Science, a group spanning physical, biological and medical fields.
